Getting to know Diane

* How did you get started in minis?
1. Connie Hansen was the one that sort of "pushed" me into miniatures...LOL We met while we were both buying green ware for big dolls.
* Do you specialize in one particular miniature item? If so, how (and why) did you focus on that one?
2. At this time I only make miniature porcelain dolls because I love it !
* Do you sell your pieces? If so, how? (ebay, MOA, shows, website etc)
3. I sell my dolls from various places, Ebay, MOA and webshots.
* Where do you get your inspiration?
4. Inspiration comes from things I see, maybe a song and when all else fails, I do a google search.
* Has the work of another artist inspired you?
5. I am always inspired by other artisians.
* If you use eBay have you been satisfied with them, or would you prefer to sell through another auction site? Why?
6. Ebay has been good to me, except for the fees. I would like to be able to sell my works on a site that is designed for miniatures only, as is MOA. This is something that needs to catch on, it's nice to be isolated from all the other stuff that you find on ebay !
* Does your family support you in this endeavor? How?
7. Yes, my significant other and my son really do support me . Jim does the laundry and sometimes the cooking, my son Dan tells everyone about his mother and what I do. He is really proud of me.
* How do you support the hobby in general?
8. I am not sure how to answer this, I used to collect but have too much now, I occasionally buy something that really turns my head, something for my room boxes, or doll house.
* Have you learned a hint that's been especially helpful? Will you share it for this article?
9. My "hint" is to follow your dreams. Dressing a doll can be frustrating indeed ! Do what makes you happy, if you are happy with your finished piece, most likely others will be too !
* Anything else that you would like collectors to know about you and your work.
10. I have been making miniature dolls since 1995, I started with big dolls in 1992 and had a store front where I taught classes on doll making. I even sold a few (<: Dolls are my passion, I have even started sculpting again, this has been something I have wanted to do for a very long time. I have many little alien heads hanging around, but occasionally I do get a nice "fininshed" doll. I am making my own molds and well, I am having fun, that's the important thing.

Kristyn Start of KesMinis & Studiokes!

My love of dollhouse miniatures started at age 5 with my first dollhouse, but it became a business for me in 1990 when I built my first dollhouse.

Like any professional artist I have "periods". Rather then the "blue period" I have experienced the "Wallpaper Period" the "Pussy Willow Persian Period" and my favorite the "cake period". Plus a whole slew of others too many to name.

I get sooo many ideas each & everyday that I've been unable to focus all of my attention on just one item. However, Ron Mummert once told me that my paintings are so great I should stop making everything else and just make those!

I have a website exclusively for the dolls' house designs & miniatures and another website exclusively for the miniature artwork.

I also sell wholesale to shops & show dealers for the purpose of resale. Of course, I sell items on Miniatures Only Auction site under the user id kesmini and lastly I sell at shows.

My favorite shows to do & attend are by Molly Cromwell. I highly recommend her Sarasota & Orlando, FL Events and if your able do the Funday Workshop!

I'm inspired by what I see around me. I see something and think that would be cool to have in miniature. For my miniature artwork I am inspired greatly by other artisans: Monet, Renoir & Matisse are my ultimate favorites. I've learned their techniques and incorporate the styles into nearly all my artwork.

I have done reproductions of the masters, however, they are of course much tinier then the originals. In the miniature industry I am greatly inspired by Ron Mummert, Rik Pierce, Braxton Payne, and Pit Ginsberg.

I have used Ebay in the past and continue to use it for everyday items, I have been satisfied in the past auctioning off miniatures until I started listing on MOA. I haven't listed any miniature items at Ebay since.

It is an industry that my sister (Lisa) and I have shared. She was the proprietor of Phoebe's Miniatures in Peddler's Village, Pennsylvania.

Working with Lisa really cultivated my love of miniatures and educated me in a hands-on & historical way leading me to create my own miniature designs & structures. I was ultimately encouraged to start my own business in 2003.

I have a How-To project website, where I offer a free miniature project each month. It is called: Make This! with Miss Kris the location is:
I also appreciate other artisans and purchase items at my nearest miniature shop. You may see items on the web and think I can make that myself, maybe you can. However, it is important to keep the industy up and running by purchasing at your local miniature shop. Plus purchasing artisan pieces also gives you a conversation piece, a piece of history of the industry and of course the piece itself.

I have been unsuccessful when hand pleating draperies, until Ron Mummert gave me a great tip.

1st: Cut a piece of matteboard the shape & size desired to frame your dollhouse window with draperies.
2nd: Hot glue thick string all along one side of the matteboard, up and down the side panels and scalloped for the valance. Leave about 1/4" space between each string.
3rd: Cover the 1/4" spaces with tacky glue or fabric glue.
4th: Apply your drapery fabric over the whole shape. Pressing the fabric into the 1/4" spaces in between the strings to create "Pleates"!
5th: Adorn with decorative ribbon trims, tassels, etc.

I am a professional artist with a degree in Fine Arts & Graphic Design, and 19 years of experience working in the miniatures industry.

I am always interested in new ideas and welcome custom orders.
